Chapter 1

▬▬▬▬▬

A girl with long, golden hair stands alone in the center of a battlefield. Tears streak her face as she mourns her loss. Her whole city lies in ashes, strewn with carnage, and the only friend she can count on is her malefic cannon. That gleaming bronze cannon filled with swirling blue energy. The very life of her now abandoned city.

▬▬▬▬▬

I wait for the ashes to settle, and I run. Away from this damned place. Why? Why was I left coated in the ashes of my beloved city when everybody else could rest in peace, knowing they died a war hero? They left me up here to bathe in my own guilt.

"Useless girl. Can't you do anything right? It's a pity your sister died instead of you disgraceful wretch."

D, and The Occult. We live in the same galaxy as the humans, the Milky Way. Our planet is veiled from their eyes, courtesy of the Occult. We are invisible to them, and so are our cities and empires that we've built on the other planets. They sit on their couches, twiddling their thumbs as we invade their fellow planets. Earth is the only one we have yet to massacre. Our planet is veiled from the beings, courtesy of the Occult.

Move Layla, my mind tells me that I need to keep moving. Lord's not going to stop looking for me, and I am in no condition to fight them should I meet them again. I feel a bitter resentment towards the other groups. Lord was a natural enemy among us heroes, but none of the others were caring enough to even send in one damn soldier. Talk about great teamwork.

I plant the butt of my malefic gun into the fertile soil surrounding this sacred place. Scattered around the universe are base shrines, the spiritual places where you can morph. Trained warriors have at least 4 skins. Newer heroes tend to have just 2 or 3 skins. There are a few exceptions, though.

I, being the skilled warrior I am, have 6 skins, my favorite and current one being the Malefic Gunner. I wear an old fashioned dress, cut off at my thighs made of leather and almost dirty looking cloth. Atop my head are some goggles, also made of leather, with flexible clear glass. Impossible to scratch, Hard to break, and it never fogs.

I kneel in the middle of the shrine. My long pigtails of blond hair touching the holy soil, yet they seem to become cleaner. Base shrines are a sanctuary of sorts. They remove scars, and speed up the healing process on fatal wounds. I watch as the dozens of small cuts magically fade away. This is the work of Rafaela.

I repeat the prayer necessary to morph;

Oh sacred spectre, spirit of the galaxy

Grant me my spiritual form,

My second skin; Layla, Blue Spectre!

With that, a shimmering blue energy shrouds me as my form takes shape. My body is the same, but i can feel the extra energy pulsing through me. Changing into a different form grants me more power than my first skin, but it is only a few points of energy, not enough to make difference.

With my health replenished, I sit down and run my fingers trance-like over my gun. It is now blue and purple, with the word GLOBE written on it. Everything I see is tinted with violet. My goggles are now a helmet with two antennae sticking out of it, and a visor covering my eyes. I look weirdly robotic, kind of like a deejay in a club.

Just for fun, I will the gun to fire a blast of energy, costing me some mana, but that's irrelevant. Blue energy screams out of the gun. It's amazing to watch, even though I've seen it many times. The energy shoots up 17 feet, hitting an owl that happened to be flying past. The owl drops to the ground, contorting with pain. It's underbelly is burned blue, with malefic energy clouding over it's eyes. I watch as it stops shaking, the life draining out of the animal. I hover my gun over the animal and i feel the malefic energy pour right back into the gun.

I look into the barrel of the gun-it's more like the size of a mini cannon- and I see the swirling energy, what's left of my city. My father gave this gun to me, and i won't let him down. The inside of the barrel looks like a black hole, the energy swirling like a galaxy.

A loud rustling sound shakes me from my blissful sleep. Stars dot the night sky, shining bright against the ominous void. I glance to my right and left, not quite processing what just happened. I stretch my back and yawn, my eyesight hazy. The leaves rustle yet again, and I am instantly alert, my mind swarming.

Has Lord followed me? I wonder, panic starting to settle in. It is eerily quiet, and just then, I sense a presence. A figure with a harsh orange glow around it jumps out of the bush, holding a partly transparent shield out. I grab my gun and launch a malefic bomb at the figure. The shield dissolves the blue energy making it disappear into thin air. My gun has unlimited energy, but with this shield, I can run out of energy real quick. I rummage in my bag and pull out a mana-regen necklace. This will allow me to regenerate my mana more efficiently.

I try to launch a Void Projector, and it successfully bypasses the shield, injuring the figure. It jumps out of the bush with a shout and I see that I have accidentally hit another hero, an elf. "Stop!" she yells, holding up her hands," Are you Layla, the Malefic Gunner?"

"What do you want?" I ask. "My city has been destroyed, I am the sole survivor. Haven't I gone through enough without a silly elf interrupting my mourning?" The elf's face falls, obviously dismayed at the sound of these harsh words. After everything, I'm not quite sure that I can handle whatever she wants. After all, traitors are all around us. The Malefic City was destroyed because of an anonymous tip to Lord.

" I am Lolita, and I was sent here to check on the Malefic City. If you'll follow me, I can give you another purpose in life. I have been sent by my queen, and there's a place, far away, where we can show our worth. With friends."

Those last words hit me like a nuclear bomb, and tears prickle my eyes. This is truly a gift from Rafaela herself. A blessing. She is giving me another chance at life, and I won't screw it up this time.
